1970 – 1984
The lead up to the club centennial had been positive with a strength in both club numbers and performances stretching back to the mid 1970’s. An upsurge in cricket occurred about this time due mainly to an influx of keen new cricketers to the town along with renewed interest from long-standing members.
Schoolboy cricket began again and on Tuesday evenings the Oval was packed with keen young players, many of whom emerged as fine cricketers within a decade.
Before long Temuka had the Second Grade team playing with distinction in the local competition and a Third Grade team that became a core of solid fun-loving cricketers who played on well into the 90s. On top of this in the JAB section we also had two morning schoolboy teams playing.
Temuka was automatically promoted to senior by winning the second grade competition in the 1977-78 season.
The senior side was strengthened by the return of Andy Donehue and Phil d’Auvergne from Geraldine. Both remained strong all-rounders for the club.
The skills and leadership ability of d’Auvergne since he became the Temuka senior captain was of tremendous value to the club. He also was captain of the South Canterbury side and was widely regarded as the finest all-rounder in the area.
In the latter years the club had produced fine young cricketers such as Riki Ross, David Fisher and Robin Greer, who have all been representatives at the Colts level. Many other players who have played for Temuka have gone on to play representative cricket. Amongst them, S Hampson, P Geddes, L Hewitson, S Davenport, B Mackle, T Mackle, A Mayston, R Henderson, H Broker, R Preston, A Fisher, Reverend M Hawke, K Ibadulla, G Shaw, S Gilkison, K Teahen and J Geddes.
A school boy, Nathan McNicol, was chosen to play in the South Canterbury under 15’s in the 2007 – 2008 season.
In the 1981/82 season a Temuka women’s team was entered in the South Canterbury competition.
